Chapter Fourteen

My fingers tap away at the table as I drum a continuous beat. My mind runs a mile a minute as I think of all the possibilities, my body unable to stay still as I practically bounce up and down in excitement.

“Well?” I coax, unable to wait any longer for an answer. I lean against the wooden table, placing both my hands under my chin to stop them from constantly fidgeting.

I wait in poorly concealed impatience as I give the small cafeteria—one of many in Damien’s huge building—a once-over. Not finding anything to catch my attention at the moment, I turn my gaze to the man before me once again, even going so far as to bat my eyelashes.

“After all my thinking and searching over this, I have come up with …” His clear blue eyes shine, and I lean forward in my chair, eager to hear the details.

“Go on?”

“I have come up with absolutely nothing.” My mouth falls open, and I let a little screech of indignation and annoyance slip out of my mouth as my hand goes to slap the idiotic man in front of me.

“What?”

“That man is indecipherable,” Greg tries to explain while I shake my head.

“I thought you guys have been friends since your diaper days and were the Three Musketeers or something,” I say, but I come to a stop at Greg’s look of sheepishness.

“We have, but that man doesn’t tell me shit about what he likes and what he doesn’t. He’s like a freaking robot. He doesn’t have a favorite animal, television show, music. Hell, he doesn’t even have a favorite color,” Greg says as he throws his hands in the air to show just how little he knows about his best friend.

“He likes the color black.”

Greg stares at me blankly before shaking his head. “He’s barely known you for a month, and you know him better than I do. And black isn’t a color, it’s the absence of color,” he informs me intelligently while I nod in return.

“Wow, thank you so much. I don’t know what I would have done without that information. My life is so much clearer now,” I answer sarcastically but then moan as I realize that I have nothing to base my date idea on.

Greg chews on his lower lip in thought before brightening up as he smiles at me. “How about I ask him? I could just casually bring it up in conversation, you know? Like just ask him what he’d like to do when he’s going on a date. What his ideal date would be.”

I mull the idea over for a few seconds but then disagree. “You know how Damien is. He’ll get suspicious and think that I’ve set you up for this. He’ll see right through it.”

Greg nods his head as he realizes that I’m right. “Yeah. I can see that failing miserably.”

I go to answer him but stop as a familiar figure clad in a navy-blue suit approaches us. I put on a timid smile as I try to act nonchalant at Damien’s arrival.
